Tai Sophia Institute, 7750 Montpelier Road, North Laurel, will hold an open house tomorrow for those interested in its graduate programs in acupuncture, herbal medicine and applied healing arts.

Starting at 9:30 a.m., visitors will have an opportunity to meet faculty members, students and graduates of the three master's programs. A panel of students, graduates and faculty members will discuss each program and take questions.
Members of the institute's admissions staff will answer questions. Tours of the institute are also planned.
Founded in 1975 as a healing arts clinic, the institute was the first school in the country to offer an accredited acupuncture program and a master's degree in herbal medicine.

Health program open for high schoolers
The Howard County Public School System has entered into a partnership with Harbor Hospital in Baltimore to give Howard County high school students opportunities to experience the rewards and demands of careers in health care.
The hospital and school system will match qualified students with internship opportunities in medicine and hospital administration, marketing, finance and other areas. Hospital staff will oversee students' independent research projects in disciplines such as radiology, nursing, wellness and the business of medicine.
The hospital will also work with schools to promote health and life care services in Howard County through events such as health fairs and sports safety seminars.
The partnership agreement was signed July 5 at the Sheraton Columbia Hotel.

Health fair // As part of "Celebrate Merriweather," a daylong family festival marking Columbia's 40th birthday, Howard County General Hospital will hold a Community Health Fair from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday at Merriweather Post Pavilion. About 70 exhibitors will provide screenings and health and safety information. Local nonprofit organizations will provide information on services available in the community. The fair, which is being held on the final day of Columbia's birthday celebration, will be held in Merriweather Post Pavilion's VIP parking area; signs will guide motorists to the VIP parking lot. Smoking-cessation // Howard County Health Department, in partnership with Howard County Economic Development Authority, is offering information on second-hand smoke and how to quit smoking at farmers' markets this month. Health Department staff members will be at markets at Mount Pisgah A.M.E. Church, 5901 Cedar Fern Court, Columbia, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday and at Oakland Mills Village Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 22. Registered dietitians from the Health Department's Nutrition Program will be at the farmers' market at Mount Pisgah on Tuesday. • A course in child and infant cardiopulmonary resuscitation will be offered from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 18 at Owen Brown Community Center, 6800 Cradlerock Way, Columbia. The cost is $50.
• Child and Infant CPR and First Aid, designed to train parents and caregivers to overcome any reluctance to act during an emergency that involves children younger than 8, will be offered from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Aug. 18 at the Owen Brown Community Center, 6800 Cradlerock Way, Columbia. The cost is $55.
• Adult CPR, a course that includes cardiac and breathing emergency skills for victims ages 12 and older, will be offered from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 25 at First Presbyterian Church. The cost is $45.
